Schizophrenia

A treatable condition affecting thoughts and perception, not a split personality.

Schizophrenia is a recognised, treatable medical condition that changes how the brain processes thoughts, perceptions and emotions. It does not mean a split personality, and most people living with it are not violent, common myths that add unfair stigma to an illness that is hard enough on its own. What it actually involves is a shift in how a person experiences reality, thinks, or relates to the people and routines around them, and this usually builds up gradually rather than appearing overnight. Often it is a family member who notices the changes first and reaches out for help, and that is a normal, useful place to start. With consistent treatment, many people with schizophrenia go on to study, work, marry and lead full lives.

Signs you might notice

  • Hearing, seeing or sensing things that others do not experience
  • Fixed beliefs that do not change even when shown evidence against them
  • Muddled or disorganised speech that is hard to follow
  • Withdrawing from friends, family or everyday routines
  • Dropping out of work or study without a clear reason
  • Neglecting personal care, or a flatter, less expressive mood

How we help

Schizophrenia responds well to early treatment, and staying with that treatment over time is what protects against relapse and keeps everyday life on track. A consultation is a good first step to understand what is happening and put together a plan that works for the person and the family around them. Support and guidance are available for families too, this is rarely a journey anyone needs to manage alone.

This is general information, not a diagnosis, a consultation is the way to understand your own situation.
